Just brought in today, fresh out of a Murray County estate, this is an untouched, second model, Confederate manufactured Kenansville Cavalry saber. This is the saber only without scabbard. The grip is worn to polished wood, much like a staircase railing. This is an untouched saber from a rare Confederate maker that would be a fine addition to any Confederate Cavalry display.

These are often referred to as “The Old Wristbreaker” because of how heavy they were. This example is out of the local area and was almost certainly Confederate carried. The blade remains clean with no rusting and has some residue of having been lightly plated at some point. Most of the plating is worn away. The blade is marked with the “Rooster” which is one of the German maker hallmarks. The cast brass guard remains in very nice condition and has a rich, aged, brown patina. The original leather grip had deteriorated away, and the grip has been professionally restored.

The West Point Cadets’ Sword is issued to cadet officers of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York for wear when the uniform is designated as “under arms,” to include formal functions, drill, parades, inspections and graduation. The swords are issued to cadets in their First Class 4th year, and are returned to the Academy upon separation. Despite its straight blade and lack of a knuckle guard, it is referred to by USMA staff and cadets as a “saber,” likely because the commands for its manual of arms utilize that term as the command of execution e.

The Ames model seems to be the grandparent of this type of Academy sword. The Academy added specific heraldry to their sword starting in Other academies customized their swords, but now only 2 remain. The West Point-specific Cadet Sword is sold only to current cadets and alumni.
